Well, that's one point. The other is, big companies will rather stick to stuff they already produce before closing the entire line to make place for a new drug.
Researches take time and money and i bet company would probably make sure they're getting it all back. Even it they would support the research, they have to do series of tests to make sure medicine is ready to go to the market. And this takes many, many years.
If I recall correct 1 gram of Factor VIII costs about 40,000$.
