Yes, I always wondered about that.

Though You are still making hybrids. The rare occasion is when both male and female versions of the hybrid can reproduce together, and the offspring are similar to their hybridised parents. Then you have a new species.


An interesting point on this off-topic tangent: White headed and ruddy ducks. When hybridised, all the offspring are ruddy. Although genetically different, it appears that the two species had not fully diverged. Usually hey would have met each other, but the ruddy is now an invasive species... I think in Spain, though I'm not sure.

It is though that the early Homo lineage diverged and hybridised with the early Pan lineage, (back then the same genus) several times before the definite split finally occurred. There is some evidence that H. sapiens bred with Neanderthals, and that we could still carry immediate Neanderthal genes that we have inherited all these years.
