There's actually one place where there's a glitch that allows you to pass the Mud before he shoots at ya. Damn you XP for not allowing me to install AO so that I may take a screenshot of it!

Shortcut — get as close to the Mudokon as you can (this may take a little practice). Something I noticed about these Native Mudokons — they can’t whistle and use their weapons at the same time. So carefully time yourself to the very moment when he whistles and his head leans forward. You should be able to roll past him without getting shot.
