I thought the Scrabs in the Scrabanian temple still bred, hence the nests. It being their breeding season was one reason (admittedly of several) OWI gave to explain Scrab solitude in the Abe games, as opposed to their running in herds in Munch’s Oddysee.

Plus who’s to say they don’t get food? Who knows what lesser desert creatures survive in the desert and find their way into the temple? We only get to see short periods of time in the games.
