I think he meant celebrated as in a kind of, umm... celebrational thing. Not exactly worshiping, but still a kind of celebration. (not exactly sure as I am definitely not Bullet Magnet.)
And about them celebrating/worshipping the gabbits instead of any other species, I think that maybe the Muds are kind of like the native americans. They celebrate
all of nature. And, although we have no evidence that they
do in fact worship them we may not know until we see more of the mudokon life style. (especially that around the Mongo river area.)
