And, another question!
How come the three word story thread was closed and the ban game thread was closed? I can kinda understand why, but why didn't a moderator post the reasoning for it being closed.

The threads got closed because it became a huge spam fest between several members. Spam is not tolerated in the OWF and so the threads were closed.

Like everyone else has said the little green/red buttons tell you whether or not a member is online. I was unsure whether you meant the little purple dots under the avatar [which change colour depending on whether you're a moderator, admin or specialy loved member].
