Wait a second, where does this come from? I’m not familiar with it. Are you sure someone hasn’t just taken the phrase ‘hanging out at the bottom of the food chain’ a little too literally? It has been used to describe both Abe and Munch in the sense that they are average schmucks in overwhleming circumstances, not that they’re primary consumers or anything like that.

Couldn't it work both ways though? I mean, they were both in a world where the odds were against them, plus they were both a food source for the Industrialists. The same thing goes for Stranger, although his species was hunted for sport instead of eaten. I believe that if Squeek's Oddysee does indeed come to exist someday, that Squeek will both face the same problems as Abe and Munch as well as be one of the creatures either eaten or hunted down by the industrialists.
