But tips are how the waiters/waitresses make their money. It's most definitely rude not to tip your server if he treated you well yet he only made a little over $1 in that half hour that he served you. If you could easily afford where you were eating, it wouldn't hurt you to show some courtesy and give the guy a decent tip.
In some well organised countries, waiters are actually paid a wage (How shocking!!). If you particularly enjoyed the service you can put a tip on top but it's not necessary or expected. Sure, it means your food is ostensibly more expensive but you end up paying the same amount anyway without the risk for the waiter and the mental calculation for the patron.
