MSN almost certainly existed before OddChat did. However, as the people who frequented OddChat became closer friends, they most likely added each other to IM clients, which are far handier than some applet embedded on a webpage.
At this point in time, I say just add whomever you wouldn't mind speaking to. /me goes to remove IM details from his profile.
