I'll point out that he is only the second documented death by a stingray in Australia's history - now that is unlucky.
It's a shame for him to have died at all - he was one hell of a character. RIP, I guess.

Anyway I loved the guy, and well I've already said what I think of this on my livejournal.

For 15 years Steve Irwin has shown us and taught us things about animals that we otherwise would never have known.
He was a great man, and he will be sorely missed.
