The idea was to base them on animals that lead meaningless, banal lives, hence the chickens. But hey- you see "normal" birds and fish in the games, and I would think that the appearance of an actual Clakker would make rather more than local news.

I agree with that. I thought the Clakkerz were a great way to strengthen the red neck esque setting that SW took place in. If you've ever fully observed a chicken's life in a pen, you can see where they drew their inspiration to use them.

And they only appear to be chicken like. The concept art shows feathery, beaky things.
