The shows main gimmick/selling feature is that it's so awfully crap, it still is a joke in many peoples eyes and rightly so.  |
The facts say differently. It receives VERY good press, on the whole. The viewing figures are fantastic. And the Audience Appreciation Index (an average percentage taken from a group of the audience to gauge how a show was taken) very rarely straying from the 80s.

But that's exactly the thing, and part of the reason why it was brought back - Saturday night schedules were shocking, the ratings were pretty dire. Nobody was watching those slots.
Doctor Who has fundamentally changed that view.
