Dave was (reasonably) safe and Fisher was distracted with the smaller phoenix. Pseok was slightly disconcerted to find he no longer felt any urge to change. This was probably the second time when this had bothered him. If the dark phoenix's attention moved back to Dave he wouldn't be able to protect him, and this smaller bird (who was definately not on Fisher's side, whether or not it was helping Pseok was another matter) looked in need of some backup.
Throwing himself into danger didn't seem like a good idea. his changes had never been preictable and to throw himself into the line of that and find he still wasn't changing would probably end in something more than second degree burns.
He decided on a course of action and flapped around to move between the lake where Dave seemed to have forgotten what subtlety useually involved some subtlety, and Fisher above. That way he could protect Dave and if Fisher attacked the human he might be able to change.
