Here's one I don't understand. How come glukkons get more padding as they go up in the social class? Does that make them feel powerful?

Evidently, yes. Physical size is always an indication of power. Tall people will always command an authority over shorter people. If there's a conflict between size and status, it creates awkwardness.
In exactly the same way as women wear shoulder pads and high heels to make them seem taller and hence have more power, Glukkons do the same as they rise up the career ladder. What's more, because larger shoulder pads are
seen as commanding more authority, Glukkons who wear them actually
do command more authority.
