My vibe is that the police won't even bother trying to charge him. If her story is really as flimsy as you've said, they should be able to see through her like cellophane.
The bigger worry is the civil case. If you get any half-good lawyer there, I'm sure he'll be able to get your friend off the hook. Especially if you point out how she's changed her story and her basic bitchiness. Plus get the grandmother on the stand to defend her grandson's character. Grandmothers are good.
The bigger concern would be if he gets off but his reputation is scarred. I don't think he'll get on the news, because this sort of thing happens all the time these days (unfortunately) but it's still a thing to worry about. How old is he?
