It is a (disgusting) primitive urge... AKA instinct.
Like it or not but we are still animals, complete with instincts. We've managed to surpress a lot of it during evolution, but with any animal the biggest instinct is the instinct to reproduce. And because it's the male who has to do most of the work, the instinct to reproduce is most strong with the males, thus explaining a slight diffrence concerning that between males and females.
Eating, sleeping and mating are the three main instincts of any animal, including us.

Ah, you're right about the term usage. I lost my point in my poor wording. While they mean the same thing, "instinct" is just a nicer word for what it really is--It's all about the connotations. But whatever you choose to call them, you don't always have to listen to your id, guys.
