Yeah, no one can be sure if they turned to ashes or not. My guess is that they were.....uhm....blown up. I feel so weird for saying that!
But Metroixer has a point when he talks about DNA reproduction.
I think that's a very interesting theory, but my guess is that Havoc is right about the use of existing models. That's more than likely why Doc and Humphrey look so much alike.
