I think Doc just went to start a bussiness of his own. Not all Vykers nececerily live in Vykers labs, but they have the same passion, so Doc started an office in a place where it was needed, and had a quite the patient with the Stranger.
If the surgery would have been completed then Stranger would just have kept being a bounty hunter. Then he would not have gone after Sekto, would not have run into the grubs and then everything would have taken a very diffrent turn. AKA, the story would collapse.
