I believe the "archaic" architectural feature to which you're referring is known as the
pitched roof. And it's not some kind of acient technology FYI, it's still a building standard all over the world, including the USA, where the shallow pitch is more common.
But please don't refer to our country like it's some kind of quaint historic artefact where there are all these strange and backward old fashioned features. It's called a superiority complex and it doesn't win you any points.
