I'm not going to walk down the much trodden path here and assume this is how the majority of all Americans are, because to be honest it's hard to make that kind of judgement based on one person.

I'd also suggest that you don't listen to all the people that say "I come across people like that all the time." I'd say the majority of persons who make comments such as that are simply exhaggerating (sp) to squeeze out a bit of humor. That, or people just follow the tendency to only note the negatives (ie idiots of the world) and gain the wrong impression in their own minds.
