At least the original explained it better: The aliens were in the process of changing the atmosphere of Earth by growing plants to produce the right gases.

Indeed. They didn't even try to explain the whole "let's watch the aliens spray bloody stuff that turns into plants everywhere" thing. That was kinda disappointing, but I still enjoyed the movie despite some leaps of logic and plot holes here and there.

If the aliens hadn't all caught colds and died like little bitches, then they would have exterminated the human race no problem. I mean, can you think of any way the humans could have stopped the aliens? And no, that cheap shot that Tom did with the grenades doesn't count!
