Speaking as someone who is studying Artificial Intelligence at the moment (exam on monday, why the heck am I wasting time online?) it's never going to happen. In fact I may just repeat that capitalised: IT'S NEVER FUCKING GOING TO HAPPEN. The fact is that whilst computers are getting more and more powerful, no-one yet knows how the brain even works so until we can have a way of scanning every single neuron and all the complex connections between them (we're talking in the order of each and every neuron being connected to 10,000 others) and then somehow simulating that, it aint gonna happen.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

In any case, Sony can't patent an idea without the technology to back it up (we're also learning about patents ATM, exam on wednesday) and it would be stupid to do it now even if it could because patents only last 20 years and by the time the technology has caught up with the concept the patent will have run out.
