You're lucky you didn't hit your head on the edge of one of the escalator steps, if you had you would almost certainly have suffered a blunt head trauma of some kind, which would possibly lead to a critical brain haemorrhage, which is almost always fatal.
I've hit my shin on escalator stepedges before and I know how sharp those edges are. What makes it so bad is the fact that the actual steps have a metal grip surface composed of raised stip fins side by side that are perpendicular (at a right angle) to the edge of the step (which is actually pointless because it doesn't offer any kind of useful grip to anyone using the stairs), thereby effectively creating a very sharp saw edge along the step edge. Also, the edge of the step is at a less than 90 degree angle profile, so that instead of dropping straight down, it overhangs creating an acute edge, meaning that the step edge is even sharper still.
Yeah. They're practically accidents waiting to happen.
