At first, I wasn't affected enough to say more than, "Aww, poor old guy." But after hearing about some of the things he did, assuming they're all completely true, he was a pretty great guy. I especially respected how he tried to reach out to other faiths, and he was the first Pope to say you don't have to convert to go to Heaven when he was trying to show tolerance and such for people of other religions, especially the Jews.
I do wish I recognized these qualities while he was alive, but I'm not Catholic, so I guess I really never felt the need to find out what kind of guy he was.
