Birds are smaller and punier than dinosaurs, but they evolved from them. Sheesh. Evolution doesn't mean "getting big and strong and stuff". God.
I'll bet thousands of years before some guy in the, what was it, 1800s found some dinosaur fossils, some people in China or someplace found some fossils and came up with the idea of dragons. And of course, fossils are found worldwide, so it's not that farfetched that at some point someone thousands of miles away could find some and make the same assumption.
But if I learned that, at some point in the Earth's history, some short-lived species evolved the ability to breathe fire, I suppose I wouldn't be that shocked (I would have to see some evidence, of course). Nature can create some pretty strange things. And of course flying reptiles are nothing new.
But dragons are always portrayed as these big boney lizard things with just these ludicrously small wings to keep them aloft. That's absolutely impossible. Pteradons (I think that's the term for that whole group of flying reptiles, correct me if I'm wrong) were amazingly light creatures with gigantic wings for their bodies, and I don't think any reptile is going to find another way for it to work.
