I am more than 3 / 4 of the way through the game - I simply put it down because it got repetitive.

I take it Halo 2 is similar to Halo 1 in that respect, then? I haven't even completed Halo1 for the same reason.
Anyway, I haven't got any of those three games: Halo 2, Blinx 2, or Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, so I really can't comment.
However, as Super Munch said, or seemed to say, Halo 2 for an eight year old might not be a good idea...
