But most of the animes people have heard of are the ones that are aimed at the younger market.
Its not like you would be able to watch the Ghost in the Shell 2 films in all the major theatre, you would for Pokemon, Yu Gi Oh etc...
The real good animes are not yet as well known/popluar as the kids animes, not many people are going to know what Neon Genesis Evangelion, but they would know Bayblade.
Dragon Ball/Z anime sucks (no offences to those who like it), just read the manga instead...
Dragon Ball GT was real bad as it was no manga to base upon (most of the good stuff about the anime ideas came from Akira Toriyama, eg. Garlic JR was not in the orginal anime)
