Chapter 12
Spider shielded his brood protectively as the bullets flew around them. Pieces of the rock they were hiding behind rained down on them as the bullets struck it. Spider peeked out from behind the rock to glare at the BBS that was shooting at them when the shooting stopped briefly.
"Stop shooting yer idiot!" Spider howled, "There are non-combatants here!"
"So?" the BBS said coldly as he reloaded, "Jus' means more targets ter shoot at."
Spider barely ducked back down in time when the BBS opened up again. He was thinking frantically, trying to think of a way out of this mess.
"Spider..." he barely heard Rik squeak, "Why is he shooting at us?"
"'Cause he's trying ter kill us..." Tok said flatly.
"But why?" Ner whined, "What did we der ter him?"
Spider didn't answer, as he was listening intently to the gunfire. He could tell that the BBS was slowly circling around to get a clear shot at them. He knew he had to lead this creep away from his brood.
"Kids," he said, "When I say 'go', yer start running back toward the village."
"But what 'bout yer?" Bas protested.
"I'll distract 'em, don' worry 'bout me. It's more important that all yer get ter safety."
"But..."
"No buts!"
He knew this was a big risk, there was no way to know for sure if the BBS will keep his attention on him and ignore his brood. But it was a risk he had to take. He waited until the BBS paused to reload again, then he bolted out from behind the rock.
"Go!" he cried to his brood just as the BBS opened up on him. As he ran, he saw his brood running back toward the village. Thankfully the BBS ignored them and kept shooting at him; he breathed a sigh of relief. He winced as a couple of bullets grazed his back and he dove behind another rock. He rested a moment, breathing heavily. Since he was without his pants that the moment, he was having a harder time staying ahead of the bullets. The BBS reloaded too quickly for him to try to counter-attack, so that wasn't an option.
Unless someone comes ter my aid soon...I'm screwed. Spider thought bitterly. The BBS had tons of ammo on him, so he could shoot at him all day if he wanted to.
There was another pause and Spider bolted out again. This time he ran toward the BBS, turning away just as he resumed firing. Halfway to the next rock, however, Spider slipped. Two bullets then struck him, one in the side, the other in the shoulder. A third grazed his neck. He screamed in pain and collapsed. The BBS honked in triumph, and strode over to him.
"I knew it would only be a matter of time before I got yer." The BBS laughed as he leveled his gun at Spider's head, "I'm going ter get a big reward fer killing yer."
Spider rolled suddenly, swinging his uninjured arm up and knocked the gun out of the BBS's hands. He managed to stand up, grimacing in pain from his wounds, and socked the BBS in the face, knocking his mask off. Before Spider could do anything else the BBS backhanded him, knocking him down flat on his back.
"Think yer smart don' yer?" the BBS growled as he put one of his feet on Spider's chest, "Looks like I still win." he smiled coldly as he started to put all his weight on Spider's chest. Spider howled in pain as he frantically tried to get the BBS's foot off him. But the BBS was too heavy and he was getting crushed under his weight.
This must be the end... Spider thought, seeing no way out of this mess.
Suddenly the BBS gave a startled yelp and staggered back, releasing him. Spider rolled over, and coughed a couple of times before he looked up to see what got the BBS off him. His eyes widened in shock...
