I think it's important to learn both, at the very least so as you can do one when it's not possible to do the other.
Personally, I'm a keen painter, both digitally and traditionally.
I interpret the finished work of both in the same way, so I don't think it has a great effect on your work.
Traditional art is possibly less hassle though, you can use your paints or pencils in so many more situations than a computer and tablet.
Digital art is cheaper, mainly one-time costs with little maintenance.
