The Hitchiker film uses the script/screenplay/ideas Adams wrote for it, so you can't complain about the story.

I'm told that he said (some time ago, before he died) that the movie was going to be as similar to the book as the book was to the radio show and the TV show was to both of them. Thus there are going to be four seperate official versions of the story.
