I simply never asked. When I was really young, I thought it just magically happened when people got married. By the time I was old enough to understand it's not a magical process and started piecing things together in my mind, I didn't want my mom to tell me how... because of awkwardness. Everything I've learned, I've learned from friends or from my own little "reasearch". My mom used to ask me what I knew, though... I'd answer as vaguely as possible.
If my children ask at too young of an age, I'll simply say it takes two people that love each other (although love is sadly not required, but they can learn that when they're older). When they're nearing their teens, I'll be as straight forward and unawkward as possible, with the aid of books and the internet probably.
