Well thanks for pointing ou my brilliant generalisation Mawk. I'm gonna get my ass crusaded now by someone who thinks that somewhere without lights and running water isn't crap.

No lights and running water IS crap though. Without electricity and running water, or at least something close, life is immediately packed into a 1400mm bore battleship gun, correctly wadded, charged, and shot back to where Britain was at the dawn of the industrial revolution.
Oil and candle lamps, log or coal fires, and lots of farming/fishing.
