If anyone is interested, I make the gray ones in ms paint. I find it's the simplest way to do them. Each pixel is put in by hand. All the anti-aliasing is done by me.
First I just make a simple line drawing, then I tweak that a bit, and once I'm happy with how it works, I give it color. Then I zoom in, and using the pencil tool, I simply shade and anti-alias the lines so it all smooths out.
At some point I will update the slightly older ones, so they look as good as the newer ones:
