Not to be crude, but when I was 13 or so, I'd never heard of masturbation before at all, yet I found out how to do it. It just happened one day. I thought I'd invented it!

You so hit the nail on the head here.
There are studies done that show that babies begin pleasuring themselves in the womb. As much as we might not like to admit it, we are animals with all of the very basic urges, survival, gratification, the need to procreate. I just find it so impossible that they couldn't figure it out.
