It would make the custom titles less special, and more of a decorative/fun feature. Thus taking away any air of superiority complex between people with custom titles, and people without them.

In a way that is what they are for. They allow members to recognise those with special skills (such as Max, who is quite literally the Oddworld encyclopedia).
