I've been as vocal about my disappointment with XBox exclusivity as anyone, but it's not like game title exclusivity is unprecedented. One need look no farther than Mario, Luigi, and their pals to see that if you want to play those games, you need some sort of Nintendo console.
I think that MO exclusivity was tough for Oddworldians to take because 1) Oddworld had an established base on PC and PSX, and 2) it had been announced for PS(2?) and then that got taken back. That situation was bound to create some bitterness that doesn't result from Nintendo owning their characters all along and never licensing them to other platforms.
My own guess is that Microsoft was the heaviest factor in XBox exclusivity. It seems that OWI, having written for PC, PSX, and Gameboy, would otherwise have been inclined to release MO to multiple platforms. But hey, this is not to judge; Microsoft wanted some exclusive games to launch the XBox, and lord knows they've got the resources to pull it off and make it worth it to OWI. MS and OWI are both within their rights to do it. But that doesn't mean Oddworldians who don't intend to or can't afford to buy an XBox can't be a bit disappointed. And as Xavier's oft-employed quote indicates, the jury is still out on the PC *crosses fingers, knocks on wood*.
