I have a strong suspicion that this game is held in oddworlds past. Shoot me if I'm wrong, but those salamanders looking like mudokons and (possibly) making whistling sounds to comunicate, and those squat frog things with those protruding anlers and huge mouth and looking strangely amphibiam-like remind me of gabbits, and that one at the top left? The jutting jaw, that... thing above it's mouth... Glukkon?

It has been confirmed, I believe, that it is running concurrently, at the same time, as the quintology so that cannot be true.
I personally don't think they are designed to be related, perhaps apart from the salamander creatures, because I know Oddworld wanted to go in a very different direction with differently evolved species.
