Like I promissed.. Though it might take me a couple days to get Chap. 2 up...ack! spelling errors...
Chap. 1: "Ged's going to kill us..."
~~~~
~Devis:
Things where nice and peacefull once we'd gotten Gellion back into his stable with my own ellum, Zanger. Apearently, I'd forgotten to close the gate or something and, long staroy short, Gell had gotten out. Ol' Zang had been nice enough to give us a break & stay put while his young chum went out for a romp.
I sat across from Zell at our "table" (a large flat rock in the middle of our tent) slurping down some mushroom soup. I actually quite liked our little bachlor pad. It wasn't much, but it was all we needed. We had our hammocks set up on either side of the tent. The door flap was to the south & the fire-pit in back of the tent (to the north). We sat in the middle of it all, the fire crackling to one side and the door-flap seelled shut to the other.
Zell & I had been raised togather as kids. Needless to say, we where best buds. Niether of us really ever knew our parents--and nobody ever told us who/where they where. They'd just trail off or change the subject whenever we asked. It didn't bother me all that much. I figured it just brang me and Zell closer. Besides, Zell & I didn't need parents--In our tribe, everyone took part in taking care of children. So we'd been well cared for. Now, with zell at 16 years old and me at 17, we where roomies here in this little tent.
Unlike my lovely shade of yellow-jade, Zell's skin was more of a regular fleech-green. He also had a funny lookn' birth mark on his left shoulder-blade. It looked like someone had drawn an upside-down checkmark on his back.
Other than that, my pall & I looked like twins-- though I still think the chicks liked me better..)
~Zell:
Closing my eyes, I took another sip of mushroom broth. I could hear Devis, my room-mate, slurping noisily across from me. I grinned at the rude sound, repeating it with my own bowl of soup.
Though Devis & I certainly looked like brothers, we werent related. There where only four ways to tell us apart-- he was about 3 inches taller, my skin was darker, I had a mark on my left shoulder, & dev's voice was slightly higher than mine.
"Ged's going to kill us if he finds out what we did to the Niwa patch" I said, opening my eyes. Ged was the current chief of our village. He'd always been a good leader, and people respected him for it. He he reminded me of Kava, an old freind mine & Devis's... I shook my head quickly--I didn't want to think about him, it hurt too much.
"Relax" smiled Devis, dropping a few Niwa oats into his mouth, "We'll simply act as if we have no idea what happened"
Niwa oats where a rare type of grain that only our tribe knew how to grow--hence our name "the Niwacans". Niwa made up a large part of our diet--so alot of us where skilled farmers.
"Alright" I hesitantly asnwered.
"Perfect, all is well then!" Dev said, rubbing his hands together, "Sooo..."
~Devis:
"So what?" Zell asked.
"Up for a game of cards?"
"Your on!" he grinned.
"Looser makes breakfast" I added.
"That'd be you" he chuckled, shuffling the deck.
*~~~~Meanwhile, at the ellum stables~~~~*
~Gellion:
I slumped down into my bed of dried grasses. Zanger was sleeping on the other side of our stall. I like Zanger. He's the wisest ellum I've ever met--though kinda old and grumpy. Still, I looked up to him.
Zanger was much older and bigger than me. His hide was also darker with age, and his tail was longer. Half of his right horn was missing--a fight with another ellum, he'd told me when I'd asked him. He must have been handsome in his youth, I thought--he still looked good for his age.
I still felt bad about tossing Zell around. I guess Zang sensed it. He woke up.
"Something wrong?" he asked, slowly lifting his head to look at me.
I told him about what had happened in the field today. He thought it was funny.
"I wish I hadn't shook him so hard" I mooed quietly, " but he was trying to put the rope mon--"
"Lead and halter" Zanger corrected.
"right"
"He ment well you know", Zang said calmly.
"I know..."
I love Zell. He saved me when I was just a small calf--thats how I met him.
"I just dont like ropes.." I continued.
~Zanger:
Gellion had had an exiting afternoon in the fields today. I knew the young buck wouldn't be able to resist when my master, Devis, accidentally left the gate to our pen open. I, on the other hand, had been content to stay and eat my oats.
Gell was a young ellum, just barely becoming a full grown buck--yet big enough for Zell, his master, to ride. He was a light golden brown with a copper back and tail. A perfect set of shiny black horns on his head. He was going to grow into a strong buck. Like I had been when I was younger.
Gell was feeling a bit guilty for being a little rough on his master. So, I was trying to reasure him that Zell wasn't going to begrudge him for rattling his brains around a bit.
Eventually, the buck calmed down and we where able to discuss more pleasant matters.
"So what did you do all day?", he asked curiously.
"Would you believe I actually just stayed here?" I said, giving my tail a gentle wag.
