Several hundred pounds every few months for an upgrade? What are you upgrading lol?

I thought that's how much upgrades were... my first computer was fairly bottom-of-the-range, and cost £1000, second hand - 150MB RAM, 1GB hard drive, Windows 98. Since then, I've wormed my way up to 350MB RAM, 4GB hard drive, and Windows 98 SE. I'm told that's pathetic, and I don't know how much it cost.
And since practically the only game I use the computer for is Pocket Tanks Deluxe, I'm in no need of an upgrade. However, it would be nice if, when I do borrow games, I could actually see the movies rather than juddering pixelated masses of garbage. And I have a 100MB video file on here that won't play because I haven't got the latest 'codec'. Actually I have. Maybe the file's just corrupt and I need to download it again.
And what's up with .avi files that only have audio content? It's very annoying not being able to play them in WinAmp.
Aren't computers fun...
