What about when they're 13+? Do they still have to abide by those rules? Shouldn't we be teaching our children to think for themselves and to encourage that new thinking instead of believing everything everybody says?

Can you read? I've just answered that question. I'm 18 and I live with my parents. I still have to abide by their rules. If I'm 18 and live on my own then that's different. Why should I argue with my parents, when they are the ones paying the bills and such? If I don't like their rules then I can get out. Plus I wasn't taught to believe in everything everyone says.

Giving your child a choice and allowing it to boss you around are two completly different things. If a child doesn't want to eat a certain food...will you force said food down its throat?

That's like giving a baby a choice. Will you give your 3 year old keys to your car? "Mom, it's my choice!." "Okay son!".
