Your most likely correct Max; I heard in an interview long ago that, like Abe turning into birds when he dies, Much was originally going to turn in to some type of insect (most likely Skrikits) when he died.
As for the Slave question, well basicly with Sam in their possession they could use up as many Slave as they wanted, All they had to do was make Sam work harder..
