Part 12
*Setting: The Eals sat at the back of a yellow, hover Taxi. It gently sailed through the air, passing large offices and appartments. Cars sailed both underneathe them and above. Looking out of the right side window, Calen watched excitedly as they past buildings, and pedestrians down on the street below. She had never been so high up before, which was approximatly 977ft in the air. Mr and Mrs Eal sat uncomfortably on the brown leather seats, they watched as they passed areas that they grew up in or buildings that they had passed as children. Grasping her husbands hand tightly, it was clear Mrs Eal was nervous. The Taxi driver was also a Mudokon, his skin was a faint red however and he wore a brown cap and smoked a bulky cigar. He had'nt spoken to them since they told him were to go. Turning to her mother and father Calen squealed excitedly as she pointed at random races and asked what they were. Sligs, Glukkons, Khanzumers and the like were never talked about in the village, the only creatures that were, were Tuezo's and Slogs and they were only spoken about as scare stories. Realising that they were slowly sauntering downwards, the Eals looked out of the window to see were they were going to land. The cab gently swerved to the left and stopped inches above the pavement. Opening the door onto the bustling street, Mrs Eal carefully stepped out, grasping her daughters hand tightly. Mr Eal got out of the other side and paid the cabby who then took off quickly, possibly to fit in another client before his shift was over. The Eals need'nt of asked if they were in the correct place, they knew for a fact they were. They remembered it as clear as day, only now it was grubby and more battered.*
Mr Eal: "Well, we're here..."
He stepped onto the pavement and looked up at the tall, old appartment building.
Mrs Eal: "Hmm. Do you think he's still alive? Or even still living here...?"
Looking awkwardly at his wife, Mr Eal shrugged.
Mr Eal: "Only one way to find out..."
He slowly stepped towards the large wooden door. It was laden with knife marks and bullet holes, not a very promising sign. Calen was quickly tugged along and out of the crowds on the street. Mrs Eal knew how dangerous life was out on the street, especially for a young girl. As they entered they noticed a significant change of light, inside it was dull, dark and dingy. The corners were shadowy and intimidating. Straight ahead however there was a desk with a Slig behind it. He seemed to be sat on a stool, since his waist was above the desk and he was able to lean on it as he read the paper. Looking up as the Eals entered he seemed to smile, beckoning them to him.
Slig: "Come, come, come. We always welcome new guests..."
He looked at both Mr and Mrs Eal and smiled. Approaching the desk they noticed two large metallic doors were situated to the right of it, possibly the lifts. And on the left of him was a door with a 'stairs' symbol.
Mr Eal: "Well, we're not really wanting to stay...we're just enquiring about somebody..."
The Slig grunted and shook his head gently from side to side in annoyance before reaching under the desk and bringing out a large, blue book with dirtied pages.
Slig: "Right-o. Give me a name. Surname then first..."
Stepping up to the desk Mr Eal attempted to look at the book himself, but was put off when the Slig propped the book up, hiding the contents of it.
Mr Eal: "Erm...Err, ok. Miak. Joshua Miak."
The Slig flicked through the pages, mumbling the word 'M' to himself. As Mr Eal dealt with the proceedings, Mrs Eal stood in the middle of the reception area, looking around nervously. Bending down she picked up Calen, not content that her child was safe just holding her hand.
Voice: "You have a very interesting daughter..."
The voice came from above her and she looked up immensly quickly, clutching Calen tightly. On the ceiling was an adult Katterwol. A dark-blue being, capable of running at remarkable speeds and renowned for their astonishing agility and prowess. Their face was very much feline like, with tiny pointy ears on their heads. This one was wearing a dark blue suit, to match its fur. It wore no shoes, possibly to increase its grip. Katterwols paws have three toes. Two on the front of the paw and one on the back. These have small suction cups which allow them to stick to any surface. They also have long, flexible tails aswell, but this one seemed to be missing his. As he studied Mrs Eal he dropped to the ground, silently. His large, round yellow eyes moving around, studying her body. His small pupils getting bigger and smaller as he took in more information.
Katterwol: "My name is Prince. Nice to meet you, Ms...?"
Holding out his paw he introduced himself. Cautiously Mrs Eal took it, shaking his paw and feeling his suctions cups grasp her palm.
Mrs Eal: "Mrs Eal. Mrs Celise Eal."
She emphasised the 'Mrs' notifying the creature that she was married. Putting on a pretend shocked face he cocked his head.
Prince: "Mrs? Surely your too young to be married. How old are you...19...20?"
Chuckling nervously at the flattering remark, she replied.
Mrs Eal: "Old enough to be married..."
Prince cooed gently, smirking and showing his small canines and pink tongue.
Prince: "And this gorgeous little creature is...?"
Mrs Eal turned her head to look at her child, who was staring intrigueingly at the Katterwol.
Mrs Eal: "This is Calen."
He smiled gently at her and reached for her hand, going to shake it. But as he did she snatched it away. Prince gave a startled reaction and looked at the mother.
Prince: "S-She can see...?"
Mrs Eal nodded and gently stroked Calens hair, reassuring her everything would be safe.
Prince: "But how? She has no Iris or pupils!!"
He was obviously shocked by meeting a creature that could see without eyes.
Mrs Eal: "We dont know, she just can. She's a little miracle aren't ya...?"
Kissing the side of Calens face, Mrs Eal smiled, proudly. She was quickly becoming more comfortable in the Katterwols company and wasn't so intimidated by him. This may have been because of his suave charm, or his soft, calm voice...
Prince: "Well, that is remarkable. I used to be a Doctor and so this, obviously, astounds me..."
Mrs Eal: "A Doctor? Really. What happened? How come you quit...?"
Gently Prince shook his head.
Prince: "I was fired. After 12 years of loyal service they sack me 'cos i lose one Heart..."
A sharp intake of breath alerted Prince to Mrs Eals surprise. He then began to smirk cheekily.
Prince: "That was a joke. Heh. Nahh, i was fired because i didnt follow regulation. Instead of using the quickest methods and medicines to help people, i used the longest. Making sure they were better before discharging them. The Cartel hated this, as it was costing them money, and eventually sacked me..."
Mrs Eal nodded, somewhat in admiration for the Katterwol.
Mr Eal: "Got it. Come on..."
He butted in to the conversation, informing his wife that he had got the information they wanted. Mrs Eal looked at Prince and then back at her husband.
Mrs Eal: "Armen, this is Prince. Prince, this is my husband, Armen..."
Introducing them politely, she stared at her husband in a way that he knew meant 'dont be so rude'. He nodded to her, acknowledging the stare and then turned to the Katterwol with his hand outstretched.
Mr Eal: "Hi."
He smiled briefly and then turned back to Mrs Eal. Moving his eyes from her to the direction of the lift repeatedly. She nodded.
Mrs Eal: "Well, we have to go now. But its been nice talking to you, Prince."
She smiled and nodded a goodbye to the creature, before turning and stepping towards the lift. The Katterwol nodded aswell, holding up its left paw to wave goodbye. Turning to look at the Katterwol one last time, Calen gently smiled to him. Waving goodbye to it as the lift gently 'bing-ed' and she disappeared into it...
