PA and firefrog are right in saying there is a chain reaction. The wildlife goes, so the mudokons and gabbits are next. Once they go, all that is left are sligs. They go, then the gluks. In the end everything goes (except the plants).
Mudokons, gabbits and fuzzles, being more sentient life forms are able to plan and fight back. Now this reminds me of a novel that I read. In the forest's time of need, Katahdin will rise and crush it's enemies. This is sort of like that just that the resistance comes when the inhabitants realise what is going on. But you would think that the gluks would be smarter than just destroying everything.
