ADVICE: Pedestrain Road Crossings

Many would think it weird, considering I've been silent for a long time, and when I finally say something, it's some crap about road saftey, but this has to be said.

Something I've noticed is that when crossing any pedestrain crossing, people just cross them when the green light shows, weather the traffic has stopped or not. On crossings which don't use lights, they just cross over, expecting the traffic to stop for them.

Even the most saftey concious person can be taken out by a vehicle which fails to stop at a crossing.
Remember:
1. Just because cars are meant to stop at crossings, doesn't mean they will.
2. There is no phyiscal barrier preventing vehicles from running over peds, just a light and/or some markings on the road.

Be safe:
Although it seems painfully obvious, always wait for cars to stop for you before crossing a pedestrain crossing (unless they're far away or there are none around, obviously). Even though it's slower this way and cars will have to wait for you, remember that your life may be at stake.

[/end of crap]

Thanks for the concern... I'll take it on board!

Tell me... has this thought just crossed your mind or is it cos you've just got your driving lisence!?! (Still haven't got mine! Pooh!)

ClaireBear BTW... nice to meet you... I've made few mistakes in here in the past but now I figure I'm getting on okay... I'm sure Max and Alcar would beg to differ though!

I'm Dark Hood, better known as Eddie. :) Nice to meet you too. *handshakes*
I'm one of the OWF veterans, having been part of OWF since the beggining of 2001, just I don't tend to come on here that much these days. . .

Anyway, it's just something I discussed with my mum a little while ago. She apparently saw an old woman getting hit on a zebra crossing at night by a drunk driver years ago. . . This morning though I almost saw someone getting hit by a car on a pelican crossing on the way to college, so it made me think about the conversation I had with her, and the conclusions I came to.

Uhm. . . Okay, I'd better go now before I get caught. I'm meant to be doing Key Skills, but this lesson is boring so I'm passing the time by visiting OWF. . . *looks around* Shhh! :P

Naughty Eddie! Naughty! Now go sit in the corner! ;)

Anyway...personally I think they should change the 'walk' part of the 'don't walk/walk' crossing signs to 'RUN! RUN FOR YOUR VERY LIFE!!'

I mean...personally...I never just 'walk' across the street. I run. Mesa take no chances...

It pisses me off. When I walk home from school, there's an intersection I have to cross. There's these signs that show if it's safe for a ped to cross of not, represented by either a white character, flashing hand ignal or a solid hand.

The white guy only stays up for 3 seconds, literally, before chaging to the flashing signal which barely alotts enough to to actually cross. It's a serious pain in the ass if I miss seeing the white guy, as it's a damn crowded intersection which takes several minutes for a full light rotation.

Anyways, you have a great point. Nothing pisses me off more than seeing people cross right in front of traffic before/after school, or seeing a person blatantly run a red light or horribly speed. Then again, there's no greater satisfaction than seeing the same person who ran a red light in front of you right back next to you at the next stoplight.

A kid at my school got fined $125 for jaywalking across the street to the school.

I laughed at him.

No, and I've been close to getting hit a few times. I usually flip the driver off and walk off.
