Members comming up with designs for forum skins?

I was thinking what if we have the members be able to come up with possible designs for forum skins?

Like we can have an annual forum skin pick (Why does that sound soo funny  skin pick hehe) and whoever's design is picked that design is stored in the forum skin option menu. In other words instead of haveing just three designs we can have a whole archive of forum designs. And people can choose whatever they want to see on their desktop other than the three main designs we already have.:D

Lets discuss!

Em... what do you mean by "forum skin"?

( Can't help it! sorry composure! )

Seriously... do you mean like the bits around the outside of the text and the colours it appears in... As in "I'm using the Honeybee skin at the moment" or what?

And yes! I really am that sad!

Mac the Janitor 04-08-2004 04:19 AM

He means the basic layout and look of the forums.

But I dunno if that many members know how to code for VBulletin. I'd do it, but I have no idea how.

ClaireBear 04-08-2004 04:23 AM

I certainly don't...

That was going to be my next question... one step ahead of me all the way!

How to transpose posters' designs that may be done on the back of a used tissue and scanned onto the forum!?

Fuzzles! 04-08-2004 04:26 AM

I think that sounds like an excellent idea - various skin choices are always popular and if people are willing to do it, I'm sure it would help out the Admins now (I guess Abe Babe does them now?)

Alcar 04-08-2004 04:26 AM

It's quite easy. Just very tedious and drawn-out if you have a style with a lot of images (such as the Industrial style). I don't know though. It brings up legal issues, such as the claim to intellectual property. Seeing as Abe Babe and I both pay for the host, legalities don't concern us, but those who are normal members might want to claim benefits.

And don't say it'll never happen. People can turn sour in an instant, and use everything they have in spiteful revenge.

Hey Alcar, I'd be interested in doing one...and I won't pull any of that "intellectual property" shit on you, I'm not like that. Anyways, is there a program I need or something?

Nope. What happens is, we do everything in plain HTML and CSS on our own personal computers, then we transfer everything over to the vBulletin Styles & Templates system.

Basically, if you want to get an idea of how it has to be set out, go to the forum home page, view the source, copy all of it, and fiddle around with it. Note that everything style wise is governed by the CSS. And must be, to conform to the vBulletin system.

Well I was thinking more or along the lines of simply people drawing the designs on paper and then handing that design over to you who know how to make forum skins based on that design, by e-mail or something. But yeah Alcar does bring up a good point about the issue of intelectual property. It was just an idea so I really don't care if it goes through or not. Its only for discussion no biggie!

Mmk, thanks Alcar. I'll try it out this weekend.

Alcar why don't you mail Mac a copy of the CSS doc, and a copy of the blank front page doc. Then he can piss around with the CSS till he likes the color. Also you might want to send him a copy of all the other little images and things that will need recoloring.

It really isn't too hard to recolor a forum skin like this, and I doubt anyone would really take a "colorscheme" to court, since you can't copyright colorschemes (And by the way, the skin would not be in breach of intellectual property, because they consented to you using it by sending it to you - if it goes to court, the judge would just rule that you take down the skin).

Mac has already actually sent us a possible new style :)

Ah - ok then. :)

Think I might have a go at this myself.

Mac the Janitor 04-14-2004 07:24 PM

Alcar, did you get my email concerning the logo?

Codek 04-14-2004 07:33 PM

How's this:

Alcar 04-14-2004 09:19 PM

Mac, I did indeedy!

Death, it could do with a theme. As in, for an Oddworld game. Like, Stranger has a western theme, so colours in a western environment are generally used. But it's a good start.

Alcar wtf is the point in telling me how to do the skin? If you've got specific ideas on how you want it why don't you make it yourself you lazy sonofabitch? :p

As for the skin, it is OW themed. It's based on the vykkers labs.

Oddish 04-19-2004 07:20 AM

Hey you did a new Stranger theme on the Employie lounge section.Nice!:)

Esus 04-19-2004 07:37 AM

*checks Employee Lounge*

He's right, that is nice!

Alcar 04-19-2004 07:48 AM

Pardon? I don't know what you're on about, seems normal to me... ;)

Alcar...

Esus 04-19-2004 07:51 AM

You.... you changed it back!
Luckily for me, however, I took a screenshot of it in case you attempted such a ploy :p

Alcar 04-19-2004 07:56 AM

I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't spread it around. As for changing it back, not exactly. I've jsut made sure normal members can't see it. Staffers still can ;)

I wasn't intending to, I assumed you wanted to keep it secret.
Hence the lack of attachment in my previous post :D
