Stranger thing to think about

Well it's possible that everyone else has already thought of this but it only just occurred to me.

I was reading the IGN article on the Oddworld stand at GDC and the headline was "Oddworld Just Got Stranger" which got me thinking that the word Stranger has a double meaning.

See, we were wondering what O4 would be called given that it is probably not going to be an ODDysee or and ExODDus. My point is that the word ODD is in both game names and of course ODD means much the same thing as STRANGE. So possibly the name Stranger does not mean that he is someone we don't know but rather that he (and his story) is stranger than anything we have seen before.

What do you think?

Miss Odd 03-25-2004 11:41 AM

Wow.... I never thought of it that way.... I always just assumed that Stranger was the name of the main character. Maybe this is a clue to the same of the game? But I think it will probably have "ODD" somewhere in it. Or maybe b/c this game isnt part of the quintology that it will be something entirely different. We need clues!!!!

I don't think they meant his name to have that double meaning when they thought of it, but just used it as a simple pun. That's all.

...

I had a funny thought that he was neamed Stranger so that everyone would know him, even if they'd never met him. Like, "Howdy, Stranger!"

Hmmm, I think Mac is right... just a nice pun... sounds like Lorne.

Ummmmm... The word pun generally implies a double meaning (or two words that sound similar). So I don't know what pun you are thinking of. Either the name stranger is a reference to "strange" or it is just a name. What pun do you mean?

ps My vibe is that the syllable 'ODD' will only be in the Quintology titles.

What I mean is that they didn't think it up to have this big hidden double meaning for his name, they just used it in a little joke title hint thing. That's all.

that's Strange
maybe OWI is heading to Stranger stories
Oddworld is just getting stranger

Nate 03-28-2004 01:10 PM

What do you mean Xavier? Do you think they will be doing lots of games with the Steef?

Sekto Springs 03-28-2004 01:41 PM

That sounds a little complicated and sort of pointless just for a Title. But like I said before; I wont rule anything out because this game proves to be exceptionally odd...or...er...strange.

Lorne mentioned that he would like to start churning out Oddworld games every year, using the new engine. I'd imagine that there will be follow ups to Stranger.

I think he's called Stranger and is usd as a pun in such sentances as "Oddworld Just Got Stranger"
I mean, if this was AE that was about to go - I'd bet my money that the sentance would read "Oddworld Just Got Odder" or something.
Just a nice pun :)

I first noticed the double meaning of Stranger when Mac (haha, typed Max again) pointed out that back in a previous Dear Alf Alf said, "Oddworld is going to get a little Stranger." I'm guessing it's just a useful pun, but I couldn't say how much thought went into the tagline, the title or the name, but OWI are quite renowned for their brilliant names (as well as their less brilliant ones - Interns, Fuzzles and Chroniclers standing out in my mind right now).

Xavier 03-29-2004 06:49 AM

I'm pretty sure the next game title will have "stranger" in it...
I dunno why though

Sekto Springs 03-29-2004 02:32 PM

The Lone Stranger seems to be a tasteful but unoriginal title that may be used.

Xavier 03-30-2004 05:53 AM

yuk... don't like it... too cliché
I realy hope oddworld will come up with something more original
simply "Stranger" is good to me

Di$array 03-30-2004 07:23 AM

I agree, "Stranger" sounds fine as it is :)

I don't think that it will be called 'Stranger'. The marketing people would veto it as it isn't catchy enough. It will probably be the standard title "Adjective Noun"
