Niceness Is A Good Thing

I could care less if people flamed each other in a highly opinionated argument. I could care less if people criticize the staff for doing something. Hell, I'll sometimes laugh at it. But really, in a welcoming thread, post welcomes.

Don't tell people they're screwed up, are a spammer, they're incoherent, etc... Welcome them, give advice, be silly, suggest what to do, stuff like that. One of the first things a new member needs when joining IS NOT being insulted. Also, try to stay on topic. Don't let fights or mud slinging against each other erupt.

So, yea, just as a reminder: be nice to new members. Pixels have feelings too, you know.

Mac the Janitor 03-21-2004 12:09 PM

Ahh, I totally agree. Some people here are just...well...arrogant bastards sometimes.

C'mon kids, be nice now. It's not too painful.

oddguy 03-21-2004 12:44 PM

I try to give a chance to each new OWF member...just as I was given a chance.

I'd be guilty of that

Ah yes, but you're the Bastard Overlord...that would be expected.

Oh well, I still heart you.

Sekto Springs 03-23-2004 12:24 PM

I try not to be mean to new-comers, but when they ask stupid questions like "what's a slig?" or something, I just get frazzled. I also hate it when new-comers use improper grammar and spam alot.

Mac the Janitor 03-23-2004 12:26 PM

Yeah, but you've just gotta remember we were all like that once. Everybody's gotta start somewhere.

Damn, I'd be an awesome motivational speaker.

Sekto Springs 03-23-2004 12:30 PM

I think you'd be better at pep-talk.

Motivational speakers don't seem to live very happy lives.

There are nos such things as stupid questions... just stupid anwsers. If a newbie comes accros here but doesnt know his stuff about the game... just help him up to speed and introduce him to the oddworld universe... I remember being like that when I first played AO's Demo... I did'nt know what the **** I got myself into, the only thing I knew was I had to get the **** out a there :D.

And if newbies start to spam... well... to quote Mullock: "Do it"

ClaireBear 04-01-2004 01:15 AM

Ahem.... I know what a Slig is. Definitely not the kind of thing I'd like in my living room!!!

But I just need clarification on the phrase "to spam" How does one, a Newbie like myself "spam?"

Alcar 04-01-2004 01:46 AM

Check the rules: http://www.oddworldforums.net/rule.php?

There should be a section on spam, and what it is, taken straight from what you have to abide by ;)

Alcar...

ClaireBear 04-01-2004 02:12 AM

"Abide by" Really?

I did find the section/thread on spam and I think you'll find my response to it on there!

Tell me... on this forum are you allowed any form of free thought or thinking out side of the box?

I agree with offensive posting being dealt with but "off topic" discussion is my forte! Being a Bear of very little Brain I get distracted easily! I also have a lot of time on my hands and flit between a number of forums throughout the working day... does that mean I'm breaking the rules by posting consitantly?

Mac the Janitor 04-01-2004 04:02 AM

Where the heck did you get all this stuff about free thinking and such, Claire?

ClaireBear 04-01-2004 04:18 AM

Its what I feel like i'm not allowed to have in here :( I don't like to be constrained....

Your rules are a little too detailed... but I'll abide by them... but I can't guarantee I wont strive for freedom and try to free the rest of the encarcerated (sorry monitored) Mokadons (sorry posters) here! ;) (again I'm joking... my humour!)

Mac the Janitor 04-01-2004 04:21 AM

I honestly don't see how you can think our rules are remotely strict...especially to the fact that they are "constraining" and all. But everybody has their opinions I guess, so yeah.

ClaireBear 04-01-2004 04:27 AM

Because of the 3 Salsa forums I also post on... not one has this depth of clarity concerning conduct!

Mac the Janitor 04-01-2004 04:31 AM

Every forum runs differently...just because these Salsa forums do not have as many rules as we do does not mean that they are "right", or that's how a forum is supposed to be run. You're going to have to accept the fact that we may have a few more rules, but they keep our forums a good place. And up until now, nobody has had any complaints against them.

ClaireBear 04-01-2004 04:44 AM

I made a mistake on the other board!

I didn't mean to... please believe me :(

Can I delete my own post?

You are officially an idiot. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt at first, but this is the FOURTH consecutive time you've expressed a disagreement with the rules.

Looking back through your post history, it's amazing nobody else is getting as annoyed with you as I am. You've done nothing but whinge about the rules since you got here.

Mojo 04-01-2004 09:06 AM

Come on Death, give her a break. She only has 12 posts. If we're gonna judge someone on a number of "wrong" posts, you'd be on no. 1. Well, a shared first place with Masterchief maybe.

Or, in other words... Shut your face, sit down and do nothing than breathe!

Or behave nicely. Your choice :D.

Havoc 04-01-2004 09:16 AM

I would like him to go with the first... :D

OK I wanted this to be short but, didn't turn out that way so, heh:

If you are going to judge me by anything, you could at least not lye saying things like "you'd be on no.1" when it comes to most wrong posts. I've got 800+ posts, I seriously doubt you've read through ALL of them and gathered an "overall" picture of my posting habits.

On a complaint to post ratio, 8 out of every 10 posts Clair Bear has made was a complaint. That, beleive it or not, is the majority. ;) I am trying to explain to her, or was trying to explain to her, that the rules here are in fact not constricting in any way at all. And that her spicy doritos salsa dip forums are no comparison to this one.

Me and Mac put alot of energy and energy into teaching her how the forums worked. She ignored it, and opted in favour of continuing to moan and whine about how "constricting" the rules are. We both tried to get her to accept the rules and just go along with it. In the end, we gave up - she can go get herself banned for all I care, we gave her a fair chance in my opinion.

I will most certainly not "shut my face" and "sit down" at your say so. You do not moderate these forums, and you are certainly not any kind of authority to tell me what to do, and when I should do it. You are also not giving a very good example of the way we work things around here. You are in fact being what is commonly known, as a forum nazi.

Majic 04-01-2004 01:04 PM

Funny, Death. I don't think I've evre heard a word uttered against Alphascrab before, and now he's some sort of nazi becasue he's trying to keep some orderly conduct? I stated in my "Niceness is a good thing", something along the lines of keeping arguments out of welcoming threads and such. These aren't the places to be spreading fights.

I mean it.

EDIT: Oh, and the majority of your posts have come from long, drawn out arguments spread out around the forums. Most have been well-read threads causing much more conflict than can ever justify the end result. Breezing through some of your "suggestion" topics may give a fairly decent view on your opinionation. Scrolling through and seeing the various places where you've actually participated in something other than a fight gives a sense of your posting style when your not pissed off. Which is seemingly the minority of the time, quite the oppisite of everyone else here.

Alcar 04-01-2004 01:29 PM

Death, you've over reacted. ClaireBear is simply a new member who is not familiar with our system of rules. In time she'll understand, but if she doesn't, and breaks them she will be dealt with.

You honestly take things too personally and to the nth degree.

Alcar...

Eh, maybe I was, I dunno, perhaps I'm being too harsh on the kid. I'll give her a second chance, if she continues and starts to annoy people, I'll happily consider it even. :)

OK Majic you've made your point, lets leave this here. So maybe AS isn't that bad, I was just reacting to him perhaps in a slightly begrudged manner, because he had already poo-pooed my suggestions. It was like playing to a hostile audience.

Essentially, I am playing to a hostile audience. I know I didn't make many friends after the last 'episode' - but I can't be a better person around here if everyone is still clenching fists from old fights. I don't know, maybe I am over reacting, I guess I'm just eager to show people that I'm not a bad guy any more, but it's so hard to avoid throwing punches back when it's all everyone else is doing.

And I use far too many sayings. :|

Majic 04-01-2004 02:33 PM

That's the spirit. I could really crare less, but seeing the first major even of your return being some newbie-bashing was just sort of... "Wtf?"ish.

Yeah... I still find ClaireBear to be slightly, if not very bananas. Just something about her makes me visualise some potty 30 year old in a polkadot dress dancing around her handbag at the bus station.

LOL. Don't ask why, she probably isn't like that in real life, it's just how she comes accross to me. :)

Majic 04-01-2004 03:14 PM

Oh my shit. Like my 7th/8th grade English teacher... Damn, that woman was off.

ROTFLMAO! (Thats stuffs in the rules isn't it? If I explain its meaning... Rolling On The Floor Laughing My Ass Off... can I still use it?) Nice one Death! ... Britain is far too cold at the moment for my polkadot dress!! ;)

And I'm not 30... I'm but a spring chicken of 23!

The bananas thing... tends to be how I'm seen on other forums too... I have no idea why!

BTW... I am going to stick to the rules... the only reason I made comment is because I'm "poohing" myself about breaking them.... I know I will! :( Being a bear of very little brain its highly likely! :(
