Inspiration?

www.feeco.com

Check that out. Remind you of anything?

Does anyone think that this may have been the inspiration for a certain name used in Oddworld? (God seems like I'm obsessed with FeeCo at the moment, trust me I'm not...)

Anyway even if it wasn't the real inspiration it's still pretty cool. :D

Wil 12-13-2003 10:06 AM

Hahaha, great find, Death. I can't imagine why a company would really want to put the word 'Fee' in their name, but I assume they have a logic behind it.

Yeah, it says on the website that they've been going since 1957... Obviously at the time it must've been the fashion to remind people you are only interested in money. :D

Xavier 12-13-2003 10:16 AM

nice found Death, I can't imagine a company realy use that name... it sounds good, right but Fee(&)Co isn't exactly a buyer attractive name

Yeah, you're right. I think it's really aimed at big industry like mining and manufacturing...

Erm, uh... what? Isn't that classed as spam?

Wil 12-13-2003 10:22 AM

Hobo has his own motive for saying such a thing, don't worry about it.

Hobo, shush, don't dedicate entire posts to such squabbling, not in my GD.

Codek 12-13-2003 10:25 AM

It's about time someone told hobo to get off his ****ing high horse.

Ahh I am absolutely loving rubbing this in your face you stuck up bastard! :p

Hehe I know I'm only playing. :D

Well anyway back on topic, does anyone else have any websites for companies that remind them of oddworld?

Wil 12-13-2003 11:04 AM

As I mentioned in OddBlog (which, as I explained elsewhere, I'm not willing to provide the link for because I haven't read a reply from OWI Fan Legal), I saw a hydraulic vehicle for hire, the firm of which was run by Mr Phleg, or some suck similar name. I'll check my local business directory to see if I can find it. I also found a large box outside a house which had text in the Oddworld font on it. I'd have taken a picture, but I don't have a digital camera, and it may have disappeared by now.

Coooooool! There may be more of these companies than I thought!

That wouldn't be just plain weird, it would be downright fan-boyish. :p But well done for shutting up when you did.

I think if you search the Forum for snapdragons, Death, you'll find that nature has been imitating Oddworld as well as industry. ;)

Oh I already knew that Oddworld was based upon real world issues and inspirations, which is why I thought this would make such a great topic...

Did you know that the mudokons were inspired by native african tribes that get forced to work in diamond mines and factories, just to pay for medical supplies? Well apparantly it's true...

Wil 12-13-2003 11:30 AM

I was aware of that, and I am aware of and fascinated by the inspirations behind Oddworld, from the names of the characters (Mudokons being a corruption of 'mod cons' is one I like) to the deeper issues involved in the plots (alien abduction, driving out smaller businesses), through character design (Gabbits seem to be the most intriguing hybrid ever, comprising parts of the rabbit, catfish, frog, aligator, coelocanth, tuna and dolphin anatomies) and so on. However, I did think this topic leaned more toward humourous parallels with Earth than such background knowledge, looking at amusing, often tenuous connections with what we're already familiar, and indeed not so familiar with. But I do find that just as interesting.

Codek 12-13-2003 12:48 PM

Max has anyone ever told you that you drag on a little bit?

One feeling a little verbose today is one? :D

Well anyway I'm glad you like this thread, and for what it's worth I'm pretty darn releived that you weren't trying to tell me someone has already discussed this.

I think it's interesting how a country, industry, company, or person can still go on behaving like they did before, even though the issues have been addressed by enviromentalists etc.

It's like they just don't care.

Xavier 12-13-2003 01:29 PM

here are some inspirations links: http://www.oddworld.com/oddworld/com...nsp_links.html

Common guys, make relations, I know you like that :fuzwink:

No, but I'm fully aware of it. And it doesn't bother me.

I was stuck at school for several hours today to finish two pieces of English coursework. I think posting here got me in a language-loving kind of mood, which may actually have improved the quality of my essays. So, yeah, thanks for that. :D

Meh, they probably have, but not in the last few months. It's a fascinating topic, like I said earlier, I'd allow half a dozen topics devoted to it, but then Xavier would be left to clear it all up.

I allways have the dirty work to do :fuzwink:
anyway I do like the inspirations topics a lot too

Esus 12-13-2003 06:54 PM

It's very interesting that FeeCo is based upon a real Feeco company... I have a bad memory, but didn't Aslik run some major FeeCo things? and didn't he say a similar line to this which I found on feeco.com's homepage:
:

At FEECO, we specialize in turning problems into opportunities
I'm sure Aslik, the FeeCo guy(?) said something like that...

Wil 12-13-2003 07:04 PM

My Odd, Esus, you're right. If I remember correctly, which I almost certainly have, in the emergency meeting with Phleg and Dripik, Aslik said:

:

Where you two see problems, I see opportunities.
Scary...

And Aslik, as far as we know, ran the FeeCo venture, or at least made sure the trains ran on time. I'd guess they'd be someone higher up than him because he's only a Vice-President.

Holy mugdroppings! We should tell alf about this!

Hehehe, ahhh thankyou Aslik!

Xavier 12-14-2003 07:03 AM

wow, amasing! hehe, how can OWI do that without being sued?
that's a very nice found!

I don't think you can copyright such an ambiguous phrase. So anyone would be able to use it.

I must admit though, what a coincidence. Though it's probably more than a coincidence :p Good find, Esus.

Alcar...

Cloverfield 12-15-2003 12:16 PM

Wow... this is all really interesting.

It's reminded me of a place I saw many years ago when I was on one of my trips to the US. I took a photo and was always going to post it.

*goes to see if she can find it in the depths of her HD*

Yep, got it.

I was walking around somewhere filling in time until my flight left, and I come across this place called "Sligo". By the looks of it, they are an industrial manufacturer ... of metals and related products. Although it's not a direct connection ... Sligs do use guns and the like ... of which the primary material in the weapons is metal.

Abe Babe...

Esus 12-15-2003 12:21 PM

... not to mention the sligs very metallic legs, or helicopter thing-a-ma-jigs.

Xavier 12-15-2003 06:33 PM

and dont forget about he masks...

all this stuff is realy intresting, I wonder is someone of OWI could drop in and give some explanations :fuzwink:

Oh my, but considering Oddworld uses inspiration from Earth it's very likely.

I know. It'd be great if he could drop in, especially at this stage of the development cycle - when everyone it bubbling with ideas but no answers.

But when you think about it, I'd rather it be a huge surprise. Hehehe, sorry to Xavier and Max, hehehe, you have to Moderate the Spoiler Forum :D
