Include animated avatars?

I was just so impressed when I saw what SS did with these avatars. I was wondering if maybe in the future these could be included in the avatar selection page?
Take a look.

Wow they're pretty cool, but are they big? (in file size i mean)

Al the Vykker 12-08-2003 03:56 AM

I agree the avatars look great, and I would like them added to the selection. But Josh also brings up a valid point of how much file size they take up.

Once again great job on the Avatars by SS.

When I first saw SS's animated avatars the very thought crossed my mind. However, the file sizes are too large. The forums are slow as it is, and as soon as we upgrade to vB3 there will be avatar restrictions - as in filesize.

So then we can't use these avatars?:fuzsad:

Are those file sizes really too big?

An ideal avatar is an avatar with a filesize less than 5KB. All of predefined avatars that Abe Babe made are at this ideal level.

In the interest of forumers with 56k, and server load; smaller avatar filesizes are ideal.

well i also started to make avatars but mine are way too big due to the restrictions so ill leave to SS

If it is possible to make these animated avatars at least 5KB, would they be included in the avatar selection page? That would be awesome.

I don't know. The current avatars are static, and to follow suit we may not use animated ones.

I didn't know this thread existed, it looks like it's been here a while too.

Anyway, I know the files are too large but smaller Kb results in bad resolution, Oddguy's dancing Scuba Toad avatar for instance was able to be used because there aren't many colours and bad resolution isn't that noticeable, so I made it below 5kb. But other avatars (such as the ones above) have more colour and need to have a higher Kb in order to look good.

I understand that reducing file size compromises the quality, but on this new server we have to keep in mind a few things. Firstly, we have a bandwidth limit, which includes all the websites hosted on the server, not just the Oddworld Forums.

We also have to be mindful of those users on 56k or lower.

Stranger avatars may be allowed, stranger's game doesn't seem very colourful thus small res would be ok.

As long as they're under 5kb I'm happy :D

:crying: But I like the Avatars up there! Is there no way we can use them?

Alcar 03-23-2004 08:07 PM

Not unless they are under five kilobytes.

Oooo, I also forgot to mention that aesthetic reasons play a part too. We don't want the forums to be a completely moving (animations) mess. Too many animated avatars and it spoils it.

But, as I said, 5 kb and it should be fine :)

Sekto Springs 03-24-2004 07:55 AM

Honestly those ones are lame.

I got better ones under 5kb

Yes, while that may be, refrain from posting replies that are only centered at one member while also not contributing to the original intentions of the thread.
