Some Reminders On Spam
 

[Side Note] I typed this up once already, and posted to find out I had beomce logged out. I lost it all... how sad. Pity me.

Anyways, spam is a pure, 100% Grade A attraction for good summaritans and evil bullies alike. It's like celebrity marriges; constant attention, yet completley pointless. Problems do not occur directly FROM spam, but from people who respong to spam. I have compiled some simple steps to take in order to reduce confusion...

1. Do not automaticly report spam using the "Report Post" feature. Save that for addresses being given out *smiles* or crude, offensive posts.

2. There are several types of spam. Observe how to deal with each accordingly from this list.

->Fun Topics: Perfectly legitimate! Examples would be Online Hike or Ask A Stupid Question. Individual topics that are catchy and meant to have fun. Some people often overreact to them and spam that its spam inside of the spam topic which only adds more spam until spam arguments spam up in the spam topic until theres so much spam its annoyingly spamalicious. As you can tell, its better to just ignore them unless you want to participate. Rest assured that these will be closed if they get out of hand.

->Basic Spam: First things first, look for any decent potential within the topic. This can save many feelings and topics by itself, and requires no moderator at all.

EX: If a topic looks like this- "hey i like harry potter its cool isnt it?", then theres reasonable potential to talk about Harry Potter. It can be saved.

EX2: If a topic is like this- "hey i like meatloaf and gravey do you all?", then it can be safely assumed to be spam. Use instincts here, if you have them. Theres no large market for talking about meatloaf online. THIS IS THE ONE ACCEPTABLE TOPIC TO REPLY TO AS BEING SPAM! In that case, ONE person will reply to it as being spam, and why. Then, no one else except possibly the author should reply back. FURTHER POSTS SAYING A TOPIC IS SPAM WILL BE TREATED AS SPAM THEMSELVES!. Be sure your replies to topics such as this are polite.

->Mistaken Spam: This is often from people descriminating against bad spelling. If the topic is typed poorly, just decode it. We all have brains. We all know decent English here. Follow steps for Basic Spam once you understand it. Be nice and contribute to teh topic if you can, if theres potential for discussion. Set an example.

->Wrong Forum Posts: Ignore these! Moderators are perfectly competent.

3. Put some faith in the staff here. It isn't that hard to leave something alone. remember, follow steps according to what kind of spam a topic is.

4. I cannot emphasize politeness here. Follow neiquette, please. Do not hurt other feelings.

5. Pictures etc... are a fine and humorous way to reply to spam posts, as long as everyone can laugh. Don't post anything crude or offensive, honestly...

Anywho, once agian, have faith in the staff. We have brains, you have brains. Understand with your brain that our brains can comprehend what your alls brains can. If you can't understand what I just said, you probalby shouldn't be going around trying to judge if things are spam or not;)

Spam will always be there. The only way to stop it is to slay the people who spam, and close topics really fast.

By letting the staff deal with the threads and users on their own accord. As Majic mentioned, the staff are competent, and further commenting on how a thread is spam when it is clearly spam, is spam itself.

Spam matters next to nothing. The only reason its ever a problem is when people overreact to it. No one needs to be slain (though that'd be quite fun), and topcis don't really need to be closed. Spam doesn't have to be a moderator problem at all.

I myself post in "Ask a stupid Q", which isn't that bad. I find it stress relieving and fun to go to a thread where you know you can just spam.

The Oddworld Forums aren't meant to be a place where people can unload all their boredom by posting uselessely. We want the forums to have members that have opinions, and post reasonable posts that contribute to the greater good of the forums.

If all a member has to post is spam, refrain from posting.

I hope that comment wasn't directed toward me, because I contribute reasonable posts of my opinion in several boards and threads. I mearly said that I go to "Ask a Stupid Q" for fun purposes. I'd say my legitimate threads outweigh the spam ones considerably.

Alcar is right. These forums are not made for people, who come here, and open useless topics, and post numerous useless messages, and are not contributing to the community.

Now, I'm not saying YOU are, Oddguy, but some people do. I mean, if ya wanna spam, go create a Spam Forum, for Odds sake... Don't do it here.

You are right majic, people who spam should be kicked out, hunted down and hacked to pieces for dog food and have their bones thrown into a manure heap, And as for their organs, they should be incinerated and put in spliff, but that is just my opinion. :D

Perhaps you should take your own advice on spam? I'm just looking back to your little outburst a few days ago, and, oh I don't know, it just made your post here a little bit, how do you say, contradictory. ;)

This post originally served as a very, very good example of spam in it's purest form. Several key aspects that may be pointed out are as follows:

ALL CAPS- IT IS VERY HARD TO READ TEXT IN ALL CAPS. IT CAN MAKE EVEN THE MOST INTELLECTUAL SOUND LIKE AN ILLITERATE BABOON.

Very few spaces- By not properly spacing words and punctuating, the width of a post is greatly inscreased, thus making it a long scroll to read the whole thing. Don't ever do that. The only acceptable reason why any topic should have an active left/right scroll bar is because of pictures.

Ability to delete 87% of the post- ...yet have it be 5x as readable. Scrolling wwwwwwwwooooooooorrrrrrrddddddddsssssss, even for emphasis, isn't cool.

I'm quite inspired to create a "General Posting Tips" thread. That way, I can cover flaming, netiquette, etc...

Now offensive posting I'm with you there but surely its a little "Police state" to actually have a go at people for not posting within topic?

Salsa is my other passion! I find that the Salsa stops me putting on the extra inches in the bum area (or is it "but" or "fanny" in America.. I won't even tell you what fanny means in the UK!!!!) that gaming can produce! So although I'm new to thid forum I have posted for years on Salsa forums... I have never once seen advice or guidance concerning how and what (or rather what not) to post... ever! Most just have a few lines at the top of the log-in box like "No liablous, hurtful, racist, sexist or abusive posting. Offenders post's will be removed and their registration revoked" Unless its SalsaMAFIA where by anything goes!

You guys take this pretty seriously huh?
